At a recent Phoenix Magic Club meeting I performed Gabriel Werlen’s Green Neck System, but instead of using playing cards I used picture cards:
I got a great reaction at the end and am glad I had the picture cards made up, because I think this packet of cards is going into my shirt pocket as my “go to” effect when I need one.
Tweak the Presentation?
After the meeting my friend Bill H. asked if I’d ever thought of switching the face down part of the effect for face up, and that way the person can choose their favorite picture, not just whichever card they happen to turn over. It also means that when you turn around to look at the cards and read their mind, you are staring at the faces — there’s no need to flip over the “bait” card because the map to the target card is sitting there in plain view.
Some people might say that if the faces are showing it’s not as fooling, but the cards are “randomized” while your back is turned and then the two chosen cards are swapped again, so in my mind one way or the other isn’t more fooling. But doing the reveal when the cards are face up feels like the effect is more streamlined.
Plus, when that 1 in 10 chance happens where the target and bait cards are in their original spots, no fishing is required — you can tell at a glance which is the target card.
The Order of Events
If you want to try this out, here’s what I do…
The stack of cards are spread out and shown to your helper.
The stack is flipped over and dealt face down onto the table. Tell the helper what to do after you turn around.
Turn your back and the cards are flipped face up and their places swapped, two at a time, until all cards are face up.
Still turned away, tell your helper to select a picture they like and a picture they don’t like, and to tell you the hated picture — then they swap those two, leaving them face up with the others.
That’s it, turn around, immediately spot what you need, and blow their mind.
Summary
I’ve only done this effect with the new presentation a couple times so far, but I like it a lot. Letting someone choose a picture they like rather than just whichever one they happen to turn over feels right — and also gives a pathway to the Bonus Idea below if you’re into that sort of thing.
It may not be right for you, but play around with it and see if it honks your horn.
Bonus Idea
I haven’t done this yet, but I’m going to start using it the next time I perform the effect. It could add another (deeper) layer and give the helper a personal moment leading into the reveal.
While looking at the cards and trying to discern the one the person is thinking of, give them a short reading…
“As you’re thinking of one of these pictures I’m getting a sense about you… I feel as if you’re in motion—maybe physically, maybe mentally, but there’s something in your life that’s pushing you forward. You may be on a journey, seeking adventure, or just trying to find your stride. Whatever the case, don’t forget to pace yourself. That feeling of motion makes me think you’re concentrating on the shoe.” Say the final line as you push the shoe card toward them.
Here are mini readings for each of the pictures if you decide to use this idea:
Tie – You’re someone who values connections—whether professional or personal, you instinctively know how to bring people together. Right now, you may be feeling the pull of responsibility, but remember, not all ties should be tight. Some connections thrive with a little looseness.
Noah – You have a deep sense of purpose, even if you don’t always see the full picture. You’re drawn to big ideas, guiding principles, and the need to prepare for what’s ahead. Trust that when the storm comes, you’ll know exactly what to do.
Mother – There’s a nurturing side to you, whether you’re taking care of others or simply providing emotional support. But don’t forget: even the most giving people need to refill their own cup sometimes. Pay attention to where you’re spending your energy.
Bread – You have a deep appreciation for stability and simple joys. Whether it’s food, family, or tradition, you understand that small, everyday moments create the foundation of a meaningful life. Right now, something in your life may be ‘rising’—an opportunity, a relationship, or a challenge.
Badge (Law Enforcement) – You have a strong sense of right and wrong, and you take your responsibilities seriously. Whether you realize it or not, people look to you for guidance. Just remember: strength isn’t just about enforcement, it’s also about knowing when to show compassion.
Tennis Shoe – You’re in motion—maybe physically, maybe mentally, but there’s something in your life that’s pushing you forward. You may be on a journey, seeking adventure, or just trying to find your stride. Whatever the case, don’t forget to pace yourself.
Cow – You have a natural patience and a quiet strength. You’re someone who provides, supports, and keeps things moving even when others don’t notice. But ask yourself: Are you grazing in the right pasture, or is it time to explore something new?
Ivy – You’re adaptable and persistent, able to find a way forward even when things seem difficult. You may be growing into a new role, relationship, or opportunity. Just be mindful of what you’re clinging to—sometimes growth requires letting go.
Bee – You thrive in a community, and your efforts contribute to something bigger than yourself. Right now, you might feel especially busy, but remember: bees don’t just work, they also create sweetness. Make sure you’re enjoying the results of your efforts.
Toes – You may be feeling a little uncertain, testing the waters of something new. Whether it’s a change in your personal life or a decision you’ve been avoiding, your intuition is guiding you. The key is to take that first step with confidence.
While some of those might feel a little “too on the nose” for a legit reading, in the context of a mind-reading effect I think they’ll work pretty well.
